Star letter: A foot on the ladder

I have been reading Sense magazine for quite some time now and I always pass it on to my daughter afterwards. I thought she was mainly interested in the fashion and celebrity pages, so imagine my surprise and pleasure when, after reading about financial planning and mortgages in your last issue, she announced she was buying a house after renting for four years.

Thank you for putting into simple terms what can be a quite mind-boggling process for young people.

Your comments

Many of you have written in to share your thoughts on Sense. Here are just a few of the letters we received:

Charity support
The article ‘Marie Curie nurses gave me precious time with Mum’ (spring issue) brought back memories of my own mother’s death from cancer eight years ago. We had immeasurable support from both Marie Curie and Macmillan, and I’ll always be grateful to those charity workers who give so much of their strength and support to families who need it. I’m glad that the Bank supports these good causes. Keep up the good work.

Fashion sense
I look forward to picking up a copy of Sense when I visit my local branch. It’s usually a good read with interesting stories, but I always like the fashion pages – I like that there is a range of prices and everything isn’t silly, unaffordable designer clothes. It just shows that you can be stylish on a budget! Congratulations to your team.

I might do
I’ve always thought of myself as ‘not the marrying kind’. My girlfriend and I have happily cohabited for six years and I’ve never once felt compelled to get down on bended knee – until I picked up the spring issue of Sense. Your article ‘Here comes the bride’ celebrated commitment in a way that made me think twice about my own set-up. I didn’t rush out to buy a ring but I do have a better understanding of why people go to all that fuss! And who knows what may happen in future?

Old-fashioned inspiration
I found the article ‘We’re the retropreneurs’ (in the spring 2011 issue of Sense) really positive and inspiring. I have always wanted to set up a business of my own, but have an innate fear of ‘what if...’. This piece has made me brave enough to push forward with my ideas. The women in the article are all striving for something they believe in, and that’s really refreshing to see. I applaud them. Right – I’m off to pack for the next farmers’ market!

Style tips
I really enjoyed your article ‘Get a style makeover without spending a penny’ (in the new year issue of Sense) and I have a few tips of my own that I’d like to share. Firstly, before you clear out your wardrobe, make sure your brain is geared up to the job, otherwise you’ll struggle to make a decision over an odd sock. Resist the siren call of the ‘reduced’ sticker in the sales – if you don’t bring impulse buys into the house, you won’t have to get rid of them later. Finally, never think ‘that will do for gardening’. You won’t part with anything that way! Thanks for a brilliant magazine.
